About the Studio

Tyler Henrie

I started playing the piano in the Suzuki Method at age 4. The skills and love for music I learned from the piano then led me to playing the String Bass starting at age 12. I graduated from Utah State University in Psychology, and moved to the DMV for work. I recently moved to Columbia where I live with my Partner and our cat, Sushi.

Suzuki Saplings

After moving to Columbia, MD I knew I wanted to share that love for music which led to the creation of Suzuki Saplings. I offer beginner-intermediate level piano lessons using the Suzuki method from books 1 through 4. I teach piano skills using the Suzuki method and will also use additional books to help with sight reading and to make it more fun. My goal as a teacher is to help kids learn how to do something well and how to enjoy playing the piano.

Services

Lesson Structure

Lessons are ½ hour. They are most effective if the parent stays in the room throughout the lesson. I will fill in a practice sheet during the lesson with focus areas and exercises for your child to follow during the week. Please be punctual as lessons are finished a half hour after they are scheduled to begin and not at the time your student comes. If we start late, and it is my fault, I will finish the lesson 30 minutes after we start.

Practicing

I strongly recommend you have your child practice 3 days per week minimum, but you should encourage them to practice everyday. You will see more rapid advancement if you do. Students should practice 15-30 minutes daily. Practicing time may include listening to the songs on the CD, Spotify, YouTube, or Apple Music. Practicing will require help from the parents. Young students will likely need assistance to practice.

Recitals

We will have two concerts each year (Winter and Spring).  I try my best to have the recitals in my home to decrease cost for parents and fear of the recital for the students. If for some reason I need to rent a space for the recital, the cost of the recital will be $35 per student.

Referrals

I love teaching your kids! If you know of anyone looking for a teacher, I would love to have them. As an incentive for you to refer others, I will give one free lesson after their first month of lessons. I'll give a second free lesson after their second month. The more students you refer, the more lessons you'll get for free!
